What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the head and/or ears when no external sound is present and usually perceived as ringing, whooshing, humming or buzzing in the ear.

Tinnitus is not a disease or illness.

It is a symptom of a fault in the auditory system and usually associated with a hearing loss.

What Causes Tinnitus?

The more common causes of tinnitus include

  • Exposure to loud sounds
  • Age-related hearing loss
  • Extreme stress or trauma 
  • Degeneration of the hair cells in the cochlea
  • Ear problems, such as otosclerosis (abnormal bone growth in the middle ear)
  • Meniere’s disease (swelling of a duct in the ear)
  • Some medications
  • Head trauma
  • Ear wax occlusion
  • Middle ear infection
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Tumours
