Are you eligible?

To be considered for the Hearing Serives Program, you need to be:

An Australian citizen or permanent resident who is 26 years or older and are one of the following:

  1. Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
  2. Centrelink Sickness Allowance
  3. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) White Card with hearing loss specified
  4. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Gold Card
  5. A member of the Australian Defence Force
  6. NDIS participant, referred by an NDIA planner
  7. Dependants of a person in one of the above categories
  8. Members of the Australian Defence Forces
  9. Referred client of an Australian Government funded vocational rehabilitation service

A full list of eligibility criteria can be found on the Department of Health – Office of Hearing Services website. Providers deliver services in line with the Schedule of Service Items and Fees operating at the time of the service.

AudioHearing Melbourne offers a FREE full range of hearing services to eligible pensioners and veterans/DVA cardholders as part of the Commonwealth Hearing Services Program.

These services include

  • FREE comprehensive hearing assessments
  • FREE digital hearing aids or alternative assistive listening devices
  • Subsidised advanced digital hearing aids
  • Hearing aid maintenance for a small annual charge, which covers all batteries and repairs
  • Regular hearing checks to monitor any changes in hearing levels
  • Training to improve listening and communication skills

What is the Hearing Services Program (HSP)?

The HSP is a program set by the Department of Health to provide  subsidised high-qulity hearing services and devices to eligible Australian with hearing loss.

  • A comprehensive hearing assessment including otoscopy, tympanometry, and maudiometry
  • Advice about your hearing loss and discussion of appropriate rehabilitation/ management
  • Fitting subsidised hearing device and/or accessory to assist with your rehabilitation and management
  • Ongoing support and counselling for your hearing and hearing aids devices
  • Maintenance of your devices (Optional, for an annual fee)

Do I have to wear hearing aids after the consultation?

The short answer is No. Your comprehensive hearing assessment will be conducted by one of our qualified and experienced audiologists. 

After your assessment is complete, our audiologist will discuss your assessment results with you and recommend a management plan depend on your hearing goals.

Should you require hearing aid devices to manage your hearing loss, you will be receiving unbiased advice tailored to your hearing needs. Our audiologist will offer you either fully or partially subsidised hearing aid devices and ensure you are fully informed about the devices in line with the HSP.

Free or fully subsidised hearing aids are available for those who are budget conscious. The HSP provides a wide range of hearing aids with entry level features to help improve your hearing and listening.  Partially subsidised hearing aid devices require the client to pay a contribution fee on top of the HSP subsidy to receive devices with more advanced hearing aid technologies.

Community Service Obligations eligibility

You are eligible for Community Service Obligation (CSO) if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident or live on Norfolk Island, and you are either:

  • aged under 26 years
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and either:
    • aged 50 years or over
    • take part in the Community Development Program (formerly known as the Remote Jobs and Communities Program and the Community Development Employment Projects Program)
    • took part in the Community Development Employment Projects Program from 30 June 2013 and received hearing services from Hearing Australia before you stopped participating
  • eligible for the voucher scheme and either:

Incarcerated people are still eligible for CSO services. Access to services will need to be negotiated between the correctional facility and Hearing Australia.
