When you visit an audiologist for a hearing assessment, you might expect to sit in a soundproof booth listening for faint beeps. While that is a crucial part of testing how well you hear, it only tells part of the story.
To get a complete picture of your ear health, we often look at how your ear is functioning physically. That’s where tympanometry comes in.

What is Tympanometry?
Tympanometry is a quick, non-invasive diagnostic test that measures the movement and flexibility of your tympanic membrane (your eardrum) and the health of your middle ear system.
Unlike a standard hearing test, tympanometry doesn’t measure your actual hearing sensitivity. Instead, it evaluates how well your middle ear conducts sound waves into the inner ear. By varying the air pressure inside your ear canal, the test creates a graph called a tympanogram, which shows us how well your eardrum moves under different conditions.
Why is it Important?
Your middle ear houses the eardrum and three tiny bones (ossicles) that vibrate to pass sound along. For you to hear clearly, this system needs to be filled with air at normal atmospheric pressure so the eardrum can vibrate freely.
If fluid, wax, or pressure changes block this movement, it can cause muffled hearing, discomfort, or temporary hearing loss. Tympanometry helps our clinical team identify a variety of middle ear conditions, including:

Fluid behind the eardrum: Common with middle ear infections (otitis media) or allergies, especially in children.

Eustachian tube dysfunction: When the narrow tube connecting the back of your throat to your middle ear doesn’t open or close properly to equalize pressure.

A perforated eardrum: A tear or hole in the eardrum tissue.

Problems with the middle ear bones: Stiffness or a break in the tiny ossicles that transmit sound.
By identifying these physical issues, we can pinpoint whether a hearing difficulty is temporary and medical (conductive) or related to permanent inner ear nerve changes (sensorineural).
What Should You Expect During the Test?
If you are nervous about your upcoming test, you can completely relax. Tympanometry is completely painless, doesn’t require any active response from you, and takes less than a minute per ear.
Here is how it works:

Visual Inspection: First, your audiologist will look inside your ear with an otoscope to ensure your ear canal is clear of heavy wax or obstructions.

Inserting the Probe: A small, soft rubber-tipped probe will be placed at the opening of your ear canal. It will feel similar to wearing a fitted earplug, creating a gentle seal.

Pressure Shift: You will hear a low-frequency hum or tone, and you will feel a brief, slight change in air pressure in your ear—very similar to the sensation of your ears adjusting during a flight or when driving up a steep hill.

Keep Still: All you need to do is sit still, avoid talking, and try not to swallow for a few seconds while the equipment takes its measurements.
What Do the Results Mean?
The test generates a graph (a tympanogram) categorized into general types:

Type A (Normal): The eardrum moves perfectly, showing normal pressure and flexibility.

Type B (Flat line): The eardrum isn’t moving well. This often indicates fluid in the middle ear, a blockage, or potentially a perforation.

Type C (Negative pressure): The eardrum is retracted inward. This usually points to Eustachian tube congestion, common when you have a cold, sinus issue, or allergies.
